Curriculum

Learning at MVP

The Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland is for all learners from 3-18 years old. It aims to raise standards, prepare our children for a future they do not yet know and equip them for jobs of tomorrow in a fast changing world.

Curriculum for Excellence enables professionals to teach subjects creatively, to work together across the school and with other schools, to share best practice and explore learning together.

It develops skills for learning, life and work to help young people go on to further study, secure work and navigate life. It brings real life into the classroom, making learning relevant and helps young people apply lessons to their life beyond the classroom. It links knowledge in one subject area to another helping children understand the world and make connections. It develops skills so that children can think for themselves, make sound judgements, challenge, enquire and find solutions.

Ultimately, Curriculum for Excellence aims to improve our children’s life chances, to nurture successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors, and responsible citizens, building on Scotland’s reputation for great education.

Literacy

Thoughout the school, our we use Oxford Reading Tree for our class readers. In Primary 1, ORT is also used for key word reading and recognition. You can download the Jolly phonics app for Android and Apple.

In the infants, we also use the Jolly programme for spelling and grammar.

Further up the school, we use Nelson resources to aid in the teaching of grammar and handwriting. In order to ensure a clear progression and consistant approach we have a whole school spelling, writing and listening and talking program. Children are taught a range of skills that progress throughout their time at Mount Vernon.

Numeracy

Across the school we use Heinneman Active Math and the Teejay maths program. Throughout the year children are also taught mental maths strategies and Problem Solving skills.

Teejay maths is also used in primary 1 however, the very clever p1 teachers have also made many wonderful resources of their own. These are used in conjunction with Number Zoo. Using these resources, the teachers can take the children through number formation as well as counting and simple adding and taking away.

Health and Wellbeing

Learning in health and wellbeing ensures that children and young people develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, capabilities and attributes which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future. At Mount Vernon we promote health and wellbeing through many means taking into account of the stage of growth, development and maturity of each individual.

We have a well established PE Specialist that delivers lessons across the school along with class teachers.

At Mount Vernon we have a clear program of work that ensures all children are developing thier mental, social and physical wellbeing. We use the Jigsaw program across the school that tailors lessons to the age and stage of the children and we also use Scotland's Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood resources (RSHP)
